This symbol has the following meanings within the Hutsul tradition in Ukraine: it is a symbol of the cosmos and harmony (world order, the sun, eternal life, or unity of the world), used as a talisman. It is applied to clothing, household utensils, doors, and shutters to ward off evil and maintain the spiritual purity of space. Circular motifs symbolise the endless cycle of life, death, and rebirth, which shares common features with the philosophy of sacred geometry.

Outside of the Hutsul tradition, this overlapping circles grid is widely interpreted as a symbol of creation and the interconnectedness of all living beings. From a spiritually antinomian perspective, these concepts may seem inappropriate — yet as a representation of cosmic structure, the symbol also conceals a deeper, more primordial truth.

The original Indo-European creation myth suggests that the cosmos was not created peacefully, but through the violent desecration of a primordial being. Seen through this lens, the symbol does not represent harmony, but rupture. Its broken symmetries and the contrast between dark and light speak of the chaotic, primeval force that was torn apart and bound into form. At the same time, it serves as a reminder of what the building blocks of the cosmos are made from. The dark fields within the pattern point to something older than order — the desecrated essence from which all creation was formed, and which still lives within the cosmos and within us. For the antinomian practitioner, wearing the symbol becomes a way of remembering that this force is ever-present, pulsing beneath the illusion of structure, waiting to be reawakened from within the depths of our own being.
